The format of the SD card needs to be correct, however the format depends on what you are trying to do. Are you using the SD card for a recovery or configuration purpose or to extend the user memory?
We recommend industrial grade SD cards, but any SD card can be used up to 128GB. The SD card needs to be formatted with an ext3 (extra memory) or FAT32 (Recovery/Config) file system with a minimum cluster size of 4KB. Typically, on Windows systems you will need to use an external software tool to format to an ext3 file system. A software tool that we have tested successfully for this task is EaseUS Partition Master.
