Profibus-485 Converters

Question: We are able to get one of our two 485 converters online with our Profibus master. They are loaded with the same configuration and the master is configured the same for each converter. One converter works, the other is seen by the master on Profibus but is not exchanging any Profibus data. When I unplug the Profibus cable from the converter I get LED1 OFF and LED2 RED which is what I should have. When I plug the cable back in I get LED1 FLASHING GREEN and LED2 OFF. The flashing green on LED1 is not correct since it should be solid green, which is what I have on the converter that is correctly exchanging data. I’m trying to find out what flashing green means on LED1 on the converter since the manual does not list this condition, only solid green or off. Like I mentioned, we have two identically configured converters with the only difference being the node address, but one converter works and one does not. I’m thinking this may be a hardware problem with the converter since we believe the converter worked before. I am connecting this converter to a PQMII (which I don’t have present for my testing at the moment) but I believe I should still get a solid green light on the Profibus LED1 indicator. Possibly there is a way to clear the converter and re-load firmware?

Hi,

What are you using for the Profibus master?

What is the Anybus model (AB7629, 7808, ?)

Thanks,

Kyle

Hi Kyle,

It’s one of your re-branded ones, the P485 that we resell.

Thank you.

Hassan

You are sure those LED numbers are correct?

If you’re using two identical devices with identical configs, is it possible for you to switch them with each other to check if they still work so we can try to determine if the problem is with the P485 or Profibus master?

Kyle

Hi Kyle,

Thanks for your email. I have already done the switching to determine it’s not the Profibus Master. Do you know what a flashing green LED1 would indicate? Our next step is going to be to try a new converter which we have ordered as a spare. There are no differences in the master configuration between the two nodes, other than Profibus address. I’m thinking this is a hardware issue with the converter. We will perform a system reset or firmware download to the converter. It just seems like something is scrambled with this converter.

Regards,

Hassan

Hi Hassan,

I agree that in this case (flashing LED1) it looks like a hardware issue with the converter. A factory restore may fix the issue but if not it should be replaced.

Hi Kyle,

Sorry this situation is consuming our time. The customer reports “The firmware download to the fieldbus module is grayed out, the only option I have is to restore Modbus firmware. I’ve tried that but my problem appears to be on the Profibus end. Why would the download button be grayed out?”

Also, “I am running the configurator software as administrator as still do not have the option to download the Profibus firmware. I’d really like to find out what the flashing green Profibus online LED means (LED1), that’s the one symptom I have right now that is not normal operation. If I change the node address on the converter to something different than my master configuration I get LED1 off and LED2 on Red. Switch back to the correct address and LED2 goes off and LED1 starts flashing green, not solid.”

Thank you.

Hi Hassan,

I’m not sure exactly why they are having the issue regarding the download button. It would be helpful if they had a screen shot so I could see exactly what they’re seeing.

As far as the green flashing light, there is no documented reason for that to happen. It appears to be a defect with the device.
