Sensor extension cable - Netbiter

Hello team,

One of our customers needs a 20m extension cable for the Netbiter tank sensor, and we have only a 5m option (SP1627). Can the customer connect 4 of those to each other to reach 20m? Would the connectors allow it? Is there any technical issue by doing so?

Best regards**,**

Hi Eduardo,

There really isn’t an exact answer to this. They might be able to just string a few extension cables together but this might not be the best option.

The Tank sensor uses a RS-485 connection. The Tank sensor cable provided is designed to connect to the sensor and provides the RS-485 connection and supplies power though additional wires in the cable.

We can refer to the RS-485 spec for its limits. For the signal limit. which with the correct baudrate can operate at 1200 m.

RS-485 supports inexpensive local networks and multidrop communications links, using the same differential signaling over twisted pair as RS-422. It is generally accepted that RS-485 can be used with data rates up to 10 Mbit/s[a] or, at lower speeds, distances up to 1,200 m (4,000 ft).[2] As a rule of thumb, the speed in bit/s multiplied by the length in metres should not exceed 108. Thus a 50-meter cable should not signal faster than 2 Mbit/s.[3] - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RS-485

Rather then using multiple cables I would recommend sourcing a cable that is the correct length needed and attaching the needed connector for the sensor.

Give me a call and we can further discuss this over the phone if you would like.
