simplyCAN device not able to successfully send CAN message

Using the BusMonitor.exe as well as the demo application, I have not been able to send a CAN message. Both applications have found the device correctly but sending any CAN message (even the default messages) returns an error as well as flashing red lights on the CAN LED. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The device is connected to an active CAN bus with correct voltage and the terminating resistor. Are there any CAN messages that can be used to test that the device is operating correctly without connecting to an active CAN bus?
